Andrew Garfield supports new Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield is excited to watch Spider-Man as a fan rather than "bearing the weight" of the role.

The 31-year-old stepped into the shoes of the web-spinning superhero in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel two years after, following on from Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's trilogy.

Andrew has now hung the skin-tight suit up and 19-year-old star Tom Holland has taken over, which the older actor couldn't be happier about.

"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor," he told ET.

"And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]. I’m just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it."

Andrew was speaking from the red carpet of Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Annual Grants Banquet in Los Angeles last night. It marked his first appearance at a star-studded event in around a year and a half and he admits the experience was "strange".

"It's interesting," he smiled. "It’s nice bumping into friends, that’s really nice."

The Amazing Spider-Man not only propelled Andrew's career onto a whole new level, but it also introduced him to his long-term girlfriend Emma Stone. The 26-year-old actress played his onscreen love interest Gwen Stacy but she was killed off at the end of the second movie.

There were reports the couple had split up earlier this year but they put them to rest by stepping out together looking more loved up than ever shortly after the claims.

Emma has openly gushed about her beau, especially when addressing his description of working with her as diving into a thrilling, twisting river.
