Amy Schumer will 'never be close' to her mother following affair
Amy Schumer and her mother "will never be close again" after her mum had an affair with a married man when the comedienne was 13 years old.
The Inside Amy Schumer star has been open about her relationship with her father Gordon, who suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS), and used him as the basis of the dad figure in her movie Trainwreck, but she has rarely discussed her mother Sandra.
She reveals in her new autobiographical collection of essays, The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo, that she used to idolise her mother but they have had a tense relationship for years, ever since Sandra admitted she had been having an affair with family friend Lou, the father of Amy's best friend.
"One day after school I came home and saw my mother slumped on the couch. She'd clearly been crying hard," Amy writes in her book, describing how Sandra, who taught deaf children, told her in sign language, "I am leaving your father. Lou and I have fallen in love with each other."
Speaking to USA Today, Amy insists that she still loves her mother and they have a relationship, but it will never been the same as it used to be.
"We love each other and I'm really grateful to her and for her, but we'll never be how we were," she said. "I wrote that family is a constant negotiation so it's constantly evolving, but we'll never be close again."
Amy gave Sandra a preview of the chapter and gave her permission to stop it from being included in the book, but she only made a basic correction to one sentence and left the rest how it was written.
In the memoir, which was released in the U.S. on Tuesday (16Aug16), Amy also goes into detail about her father's battle with MS, recalls her first sexual encounter and reveals she met current boyfriend Ben Hanisch on a dating app.
