Returning to work after maternity leave can be extremely daunting; you've no idea what to expect, not to mention you'll be worrying about being away from your little one after spending every day with them for so long.

There's no need to stress too much about it though as if you go in with the right attitude and outlook, you'll been comfortable in no time. Here are some top tips on how to ease back into your career.

Set a routine

To save yourself feeling and appearing flustered upon your arrival, prepare your morning routine in advance so you have steps to follow. From the moment you wake up and feed your baby to getting into work and which task to tackle first - be as thorough as you like.

If you're worried about the first steps of the day, try practising them beforehand. You may have to drop your tot off with a family member, friend or at a nursery - something they're not used to - so it's good to prepare them as well.

Dress comfortably

You're probably going to be used to wearing loose, comfortable clothes as you look after your little one, and there's no need to ditch the comfort when you return to work. Pick pieces which are elasticised and smart, allowing freedom to move as well as style. You'll want to feel good about yourself so don't be ashamed to doll up a little - this is your big comeback, after all!

Take each day at a time and don't get hung up on your post-baby weight if you still have some left upon heading back to work, it's only normal. Just opt for flattering pieces that will conceal any parts of your body you may be feeling insecure about.

Take regular breathers

It's going to be overwhelming - there's no doubt about it - so don't be embarrassed about taking regular breaks throughout the day to gather your thoughts. You'll also need time out from the computer screen if you work in an office and haven't used a PC much during your maternity leave as you don't want to be left with a horrible headache.

Drink plenty of water, stretch your legs by talking a walk to the kitchen and on your lunch break get some fresh air to reinvigorate you for the rest of the day.

Ask for help

The confidence you once felt in your position may well have dropped, or in the worst case diminished. There's no need to beat yourself up about it as it's only normal for you to feel a bit lost after so long away from the job, and people will understand this. If there's anything you don't understand or need a hand with, don't be afraid to ask for help or admit you don't know how to do it. The last thing your employers will want is to make you feel uncomfortable so if you really struggle, perhaps discuss a way of working towards your previous abilities.
