Menopause + exercise = reduced symptoms
Going through the menopause, or know someone that is? Then you’ll be more than familiar with some of the biggest side effects of “the changes”, especially the king of all menopause symptoms; hot flushes.
Those pesky, sweaty, come out of nowhere and leave us red in the face flushes, or flashes for some people, are one of the most common symptoms, but women also suffer with night sweats and problems losing weight, especially around the stomach. However there’s good news for ladies of a certain age, as scientists have discovered that exercising can keep those menopausal moments under control.
Researchers from the University of Granada in Spain also point out that working can act as an alternative to medical options on offer for women going through the menopause, many of which have adverse side effects like hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Looking at a test group of more than 200 postmenopausal women in Spain aged between 45 and 64 who all had at least 12 months of sedentary behaviour, the team of experts devised a 20-week exercise regime for the women.
The participants experienced positive changes in both their short-term and long-term physical and mental health. Weight loss, lowered blood pressure, improved cardiovascular fitness and flexibility were all noted, and the group also noticed they were able to manage their hot flushes too.
“Growing evidence indicates that an active lifestyle with regular exercise enhances health, quality of life, and fitness in postmenopausal women,” Dr JoAnn Pinkerton, the executive director for the North American Menopause Society, commented.
“Documented results have shown fewer hot flashes and improved mood and that, overall, women are feeling better while their health risks decrease.”
