Men beat women on fitness front
Men are twice as likely to do regular exercise, claims a new study.
The research, which was commissioned by property company CBRE, the principal partner of England Rugby’s All Schools programme, questioned 2,000 adults in the UK.
It found that one in six women had exercised regularly since childhood, with the number more than one in three for men. The study also found three out of five women admitted they had never regularly worked out; double the rate of their male counterparts.
"Taking part in sport not only has long-term health and wellbeing benefits but it also develops the so-called 'soft skills' of communication, teamwork and confidence that over a lifetime will boost employability. There is a great opportunity for business to play a role in encouraging more children, particularly girls, to engage in sport," CBRE UK managing director Ciaran Bird said.
The women who do regularly work out do so around 48 times a year. That adds up to a whole month of doing no exercise at all. Meanwhile for men, the figure was 65 times per year.
There are many reasons why the figures could be so poor for females. One is that, even today, young girls aren't always encouraged to take up active hobbies. While boys often appear to be a part of football teams or similar, there isn't always the drive for girls to do the same.
Team sport can be a great way to incorporate sport into your life. Simply find a local group offering an activity you fancy and sign up, whether it's football, netball or hockey. You'll get the benefit of working out and might even meet some interesting new people.
Another reason could be that women feel self-conscious if working out in public. If this applies to you, think safety in numbers and drag some friends along to an exercise class or for a run. It's more fun that way anyway!
