I AM 52 years old and I had a recent check-up and my PSA was raised at 4.6. Is this serious?
PSA (prostate specific antigen) in conjunction with a digital rectal exam is the current screening test to check for prostate cancer.
Your blood result is borderline high. You need to get a digital rectal exam to assess the prostate gland. It is also important to know if you have any symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland:
l Getting up a couple of times at night to pass urine.
l Dribbling after passing urine.
It is important to remember that a raised PSA does not always mean prostate cancer.
Old age, urinary retention and recent intercourse are some of the more benign causes of a raised PSA.
I suspect that your GP will simply repeat this blood test in a couple of months and recheck the PSA level.
