My panic attacks are causing me concern

Dear Karen

I (31) have been going to counselling for panic attacks. It has generated a lot of anxiety. I feel I need medication to help me manage the nerves.

KAREN SAYS: It is important to attend a good counsellor who is accredited, and hopefully this process will help you to come to terms with the underlying issues.

Also go to your GP. If you are also suffering with depression, your GP needs to tackle this and offer treatment options. If your GP feels you have a generalised anxiety disorder where your symptoms are disabling and interfering with your ability to function, you also need to discuss treatment options. Quick-fix solutions (alcohol, Valium etc) are not long-term solutions and if you depend on them you are creating other problems.

Dear Karen

I think my daughter (2) might just have developed chickenpox. We are due to fly to the States next week.

KAREN SAYS: You need to confirm if this is chickenpox. The incubation period is up to two weeks. Has she been in contact with chickenpox in that time? The rash takes three days to appear, stays for three, then crusts over for three days, and then goes.

Pregnant women, the elderly, new babies and the immuno-compromised may be at risk from this infection. Airlines have their own policy about this type of infection and you need to check it out on their website. If you have travel insurance on your flights, with a doctor’s letter there should be no problem in getting a refund.
