These are the inspirational before and after pictures of a Dublin woman who shed a mammoth five stone after she vowed to make her only son proud.

Inspired by her son, Dean (16), Martina Kearney (44),  was determined to lose weight after years of gorging on high-calorie junk food.

The devoted mum, who shrunk from a size 20 to a svelte size 12 in just six months following a vigorous health kick, now says: “I hated myself, I couldn’t stand myself.

“My weight affected every aspect of my life. For me, junk food was an addiction and I was incredibly depressed.”

Martina, from Palmerstown in Dublin, says: “I stopped socialising, I didn’t want anyone to see me.  Being seen in public was simply an embarrassment.

“For years I tried and failed to lose weight. I did a diet years ago, it was three shakes a day and I stuck to that for five weeks and lost two stone.

“Then my hair fell out, I went to the doctor and he told me that it was a starvation diet. My internal organs were working so hard to stay alive that the nutrients that usually went to my hair, nails and skin were going straight to my vital organs.”

After several failed diets the personal assistant finally vowed to get in shape in November of last year.

“I have a young son and he knew I was unhappy, so I had to do it for him, it was a case of now or never.

“I was fed up of making excuses,” explains Martina.

Overhauling her diet and exercise regime, the gorgeous brunette joined Kiwifit gyms, which specialise in personal training.

“Last summer I reached crisis point. I was on antidepressants and I got so low. For years I followed an American fitness show on TV with Jessie Pavelka and that’s where I got the inspiration. It finally clicked with me that I needed a personal trainer.

In her first session at Kiwifit the determined mum admits that she nearly walked out.

“My trainer Matt Corbett was testing my flexibility and I fell over and I couldn’t get up. I was just mortified. I said to myself, ‘I am never coming back’. I wanted to curl up in a ball, but I came back and it was the best thing I ever did.”

Martina now has two personal training sessions a week and credits this for her amazing weight loss.

“I feel on top of the world, all of that horrible negativity, insecurity and depression is gone. Every morning I wake up I am happy.

“People say to me, ‘you look great, your skin, your hair’. When I asked Dean what he noticed the most about me now, he said: ‘You don’t cry anymore.’ It just hit me in the heart when he said that.

“To me junk food is an addiction. I will now live my life avoiding that food. Never mind having a little treat every now and again, the treat for me is just being happy everyday.

“To anyone who is overweight, just remember that it can be done.”
