It’s no secret that St Patrick’s Day celebrations tend to be tied to consumption of boozy drinks (yes, it's possible to buy green beer!) and shamrock-shaped cookies, green eggs and ham and all other manner of foods that require green dye. Not big on using food colouring? No problem - there are plenty of delicious options which are free from artificial colours and ingredients.

So, this St. Patrick's Day take a look at some of the ways nature's healthy green-hued goodies can celebrate the luck o' the Irish!

If you've never tried avocado-based pasta sauce, you're missing out. This completely vegan treat is as deliciously green as it is healthy. Angela Liddon of blog OhSheGlows recommends a simple recipe which combines olive oil, two cloves of garlic and lemon juice in a food processor. Then add the fruit of one ripe avocado, some basil and spinach leaves and whizz until the mixture becomes creamy. Add on top of your favourite pasta and prepare to get an appetising dose of Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Potassium.

Eating a kale salad is a great way to start off the festivities. Kale is a superfood that features all sorts of nutritional goodies such as protein, folate, fibre, vitamins A, C and K and even some omega-3s. Simply toss in some shredded kale leaves into your usual salad and add in avocado chunks, cranberries and sprinkle with some pine nuts for added crunch.

There's so much to love about green fruits and veggies - they're packed full of antioxidants, vitamins and enzymes which can help increase energy, help with mental clarity and boost fibre intake. And as green smoothies are all the rage, why not start off your St Patrick's Day the right way. This recipe is healthy, and well, green.

'Kiss me, I'm Irish' ultimate green smoothie


300 ml coconut water

1 ripe banana

100g blueberries

Handful of spinach

1 teaspoon of Udos Choice beyond greens

1 teaspoon of Udos Choice Ultimate Oil Blend

1 tablespoon of nut butter

Lemon juice (optional)


Transfer all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high until smooth.
