Winnie Harlow: 'Lemonade is epic'

Winnie Harlow knew the videos for Beyonce’s new album Lemonade were going to be epic before she saw the finished article.

The Canadian model, who found fame on America’s Next Top Model in 2014, was called up by Beyonce’s assistant to appear in the musical masterpiece. The project was shrouded in secrecy, with the visual album officially dropping on HBO on Saturday (23Apr16).

“I think after the filming, we all didn't really know exactly what the project was, but we could sense how epic it was,” Winnie told “Like of course we were part of the scenes, but we just weren't told what exactly was going on, you know?”

Despite being a part of it, the model was clueless as to what she was actually filming for. Beyonce has been teasing fans via social media for over a year with lemon themed hints, but Winnie admits she was none the wiser that it was a new album.

“It was 100 percent a secret. I didn't talk to anyone like my friends; I didn't message anyone on set just because I wanted to be focused on working. But once I got home, I told my sister, I told my mom, because they were so worried. They had no idea where I was,” she laughed. “I just literally only knew it was called Lemonade."

Beyonce made sure all the cast and crew enjoyed their time on set, and even treated them to renditions of her tracks. Winnie also got the chance to meet Beyonce’s husband Jay Z and their four-year-old daughter Blue Ivy.

Much has been made about the lyrics in new track Sorry, which describes a man cheating with “Becky with the good hair”. Many have speculated it’s about Jay’s alleged infidelities with fashion designer Rachel Roy, who has received a torrent of abuse from Beyonce fans. However the fashion figure hit back on Twitter by saying: “I respect love, marriages, families and strength. What shouldn't be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind.”
