VS model Yfke Sturm 'out of coma'
Victoria's Secret model Yfke Sturm has reportedly woken from her coma.
The Dutch model fractured her skull in a surfing accident while holidaying on the Italian island of Ischia. It had been reported Yfke was fighting for her life, but now Italian publications are claiming she has come out of a medically induced coma.
The 33-year-old was riding a motorised surfboard called a 'Jet Surf'. After falling off she is said to have tried to swim to safety but was accidentally struck by another Jet Surf rider who approached at speed.
She was taken to Rizzoli hospital on Ischia after the Italian coastguard rescued her from the water, but was then transferred by helicopter to a specialist clinic in Naples. It was found she had a fractured skull and a severe spine injury reports MailOnline, and it's thought she could be at serious risk of permanent paralysis.
As well as her work with Victoria's Secret, Yfke has walked for some of the biggest names in fashion. The London-based model has featured in Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Chanel's catwalks and is a regular on Dutch TV, including hosting Holland's Next Top Model.
She recently became a mother for the first time, giving birth to son Alexander.
On August 8 Yfke shared a picture online of her little boy, captioned "Words can not descibe how excited we are for the arrival of our son Alexander!! (sic)," followed by two blue hearts.
Yfke's father Wilfred Sturm has spoken to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, revealing his daughter has a "hairline fracture in her skull" but there was "no bleeding", reports People.
