Vivienne Westwood: How I work with husband
Dame Vivienne Westwood is the "anchor" for her husband's ideas.
The designer is married to Andreas Kronthaler and they work together on her clothing label.
While some couples might find it difficult to mix business and pleasure, it's always been a winning formula for the two fashion stars.
“I love designing with Andreas. Like all the great male designers in the world, he puts women on a pedestal,” she explained to British newspaper The Independent. “Andreas’ ideas are so big. When I first met him as a student, the girl had to climb a step ladder to best display the dress he made. I helped pin down his ideas.
“I am an anchor. And he locked into my ideas and built them into new triumphs.”
Next year is the pair's silver wedding anniversary and they met when Vivienne was working as a teacher and Andreas came in for work experience.
Vivienne turns 74 next year and Andreas, 25 years her junior, is likely to take the reins of her label, should she decide to retire at any point.
One of the things the designer will always be known for is her punk aesthetic. Her 70s designs boldly showed the politically-charged feel of the time.
"I realise you need slogans on clothes if they are to be political and, yes, punk for me was political,” she explained. “The world we live in is run by death and destruction, and my idea of punk was that we didn’t need these criminal leaders. That’s why I advocated anarchy. Young punks rejected all adult values. Then I realised it wasn’t enough to pogo and spit."
Instead, she believes culture is the most important way to create and fuel ideas.
