Viktor & Rolf are 'pushing limits' with new bridal line
Viktor & Rolf has unveiled an opulent bridal line with a "surreal twist".
Design duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are known for their stunning couture looks, which often involve swathes of materials and countless layering.
The Dutch designers have now turned their attention to wedding dresses once again, with their new Viktor & Rolf Marriage Fall/Winter 2017 range including everything from big, glamorous ballgowns to striking column dresses.
"With couture, it's a laboratory for experimentation where we like to push the limits," Horsting told America’s InStyle. "It's similar in that we focus on shape and silhouette, but with wedding dresses, we wanted to focus on the sculptural elements of our work with a surreal twist, which you don't see very much. There's room for our take on wedding dresses.
"We started with something very pure with a strong focus on shapes," Snoeren added. "What attracts us to wedding dresses is the fact that they're unique. It's this one-time occasion in your life; it's a dress that you wear once."
Spending more than a year perfecting their designs, the bridal line is a feast for the eyes, offering brides-to-be everything from a chic jumpsuit suit to frothy frills. One dress, made up of ornate applique flowers, looks like the living embodiment of the pair’s famous fragrance, Flowerbomb.
During the process Viktor and Rolf played around with volume and texture, and got to learn a lot about bridal wear’s most popular colour.
"You think white is white, but there are so many shades of white," Horsting smiled.
The two are already thinking up their next collection, with Snoeren teasing: "We want to stay close to what we proposed here, which is something that is sculptural, with a new play on volume and embroidery. It’s always about trying to achieve glamour without being tacky."
