Victoria Beckham delights with velvet brights
Victoria Beckham wowed with bright velvets and ladylike pleating for her spring ’17 show.
The British designer presented her latest line at New York Fashion Week on Sunday (11Sep16), choosing to stick with her signature brand of modern luxury.
Beckham opened with a pure white silk dress with pleated flowing skirt, showing off her knack for drapery. But the show soon took an unexpected twist, with the 42-year-old having a number of models walk the runway in velvet ensembles, all in a fresh palette of sorbet-inspired mint greens, tangerine and violet. A particular standout was a neon orange crushed velvet outfit with crop top and pencil skirt with a crossover sash.
Speaking about the use of the on-trend fabric, Beckham said she was pleased with how she was able to manipulate it in a new way.
“I haven’t worked velvet for such a long time, because it’s something that normally feels old and heavy, but this is something which is super light and in bright colours,” she told The Telegraph.
Another key element of the presentation was lingerie-style pieces, following on from her use of corset silhouette’s last season. This time Beckham used bra tops to lend clothes a structure of which to hang a stray strap, belt tie, messenger bag or cutaway folds.
Elsewhere, the fashionista included knitwear, fluid linen trousers with a belted waist and pretty draped details which were styled to appear as if they had been thrown together. For instance, one bronze satin blazer and trouser combination appeared to have been washed in a certain way to achieve an intentionally creased appearance.
The models’ graphic blue and brown eyeliner was courtesy of Pat McGrath, who used colours from Beckham’s first collection with Estee Lauder.
