Vera Wang wows with dark, edgy fashion line
Vera Wang showed edgy silhouettes in a dark palette for spring ’17.
The American designer, famed for her stunning wedding gowns, presented her latest clothing collection on Tuesday (13Sep16) as part of New York Fashion Week.
The show drew in all types of celebrity fans, including actresses Emily Ratajkowski and Chloe Sevigny, as well as gymnast Simone Biles and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
And for the collection, the stars were treated to a lineup of garments made in sheer, shimmering fabrics all in a monochromatic scheme.
For instance, the designer paired a structured black jacket with a mini skirt which had a long train, while she combined a sheer peplum top over a long black skirt which was covered in white pearls.
The line reminded of Coco Chanel’s signature use of pearls and limited colours, something that Wang was aware of.
"I was just looking at the clothes today, now, and I said 'Oh my God, I think there is something of a Chanel thing going on in my psyche,’” she told Reuters.
And at the heart of New York-based Wang’s collection was a desire to make clothes for a strong woman who isn’t afraid to show her feminine side. Apart from sky-high black heels, Wang upped the glamour with a parade of sheer black chiffon gowns. One standout had to be a ball gown with an architectural bottom, which had spaghetti straps and off-the-shoulder sleeves.
"It's about a very powerful woman. Power was one of the most important things, about craft, and the construction of the clothing, both the tailored and the flow, the soft," Wang said backstage.
New York Fashion Week continues on Wednesday with shows from Michael Kors and Marchesa.
