Valentino designers on Zoolander 'joy'

Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri only told one other person about their planned Zoolander catwalk takeover.

In March, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson shocked the industry when they strutted the catwalk for Valentino at Paris Fashion Week. They were promoting their upcoming Zoolander sequel and so were in character as Derek Zoolander and Hansel respectively, with the designers thrilled they managed to pull off the surprise.

It came about after Pierpaolo and Maria met with Ben and gushed about the original 2001 movie, resulting in him suggesting he and Owen walk in their next show. The group decided it would only work if it was a true surprise, so the designers only let one member of their team in on it.

"Everybody was dancing, so there was joy," Pierpaolo marvelled to The Cut. "Maybe it was the first time I felt a lot of joy in fashion."

The design duo are currently celebrating after receiving the International Award at last night's CFDAs. They were honoured because of the way have moved the brand forward, which was no mean feat. Although it was a difficult job at times, the pair are proud that they've managed to fuse their aesthetic with the label's history.

"We’re the second generation of designers," Maria explained. "We have a completely different idea about what beauty is now. Because beauty now is more personal."

Part of this is shown in their dedication to haute couture. They will never stop creating these high end pieces and have even come up with couture denim, enjoying moulding the new and old once again.

"Couture now represents the best limited edition that you can have," Maria added.
