Tyra Banks: 'My son will learn to appreciate women'
Tyra Banks is determined to teach her son to appreciate women of all shapes and sizes.
The former supermodel and her Norwegian photographer boyfriend Erik Asla, 51, welcomed their first child, a son named York Banks-Asla, via surrogate in January (16).
And Tyra, who created hit show America's Next Top Model, is determined to teach her nine-month-old son to celebrate and embrace beauty, especially when it comes to women.
"I want to teach him that he doesn’t need to go after chicks that are just cookie-cutter,” the 42-year-old explained to People. “I want him to understand that beauty has so many different shapes and sizes and colours and features. I hope that he can appreciate beauty like his mom does, like I do - that I see beauty in things that the world doesn’t necessarily tell us are beautiful."
She added, "That is why I created America’s Next Top Model - to really showcase all different types of beauty and to put them on a pedestal, things that aren’t necessarily cookie-cutter. So I hope he is able to see that and appreciate that.”
Tyra's model reality series began in 2003 but was cancelled in 2015. It has recently been revived and is due to air next month (Dec16), with British pop star Rita Ora fronting season 23 and Tyra serving as executive producer.
Despite running a beauty empire, producing TV shows and teaching business students at Stanford University, Tyra is learning to focus her attention on just one thing at a time.
"My secret to balance is to focus on one thing at a time. I used to be the most amazing multi-tasker, doing three things at once,” she said. “Not anymore, now that I have my son. I think that’s Mother Nature’s way of saying this life you created takes all of your brain power.
"Now I’m like, ‘Mommy’s going on a conference call,’ and I give him to his dad.”
