Tyra Banks: I'd be richer without modelling
Tyra Banks would be "in the billionaires' club" if she wasn't a model.
The 41-year-old star is one of the most recognisable faces in fashion, thanks to her turns for the likes of Victoria's Secret. She's also behind the hugely-successful TV show America's Next Top Model and has a Tyra Banks Harvard business degree, but she insists her success has been tempered by her modelling.
"I probably would have made a hell of a lot more money by now. Because I have a personal brand, I have to worry about all this personal-image crap. I am constantly saying no to things because of it. If I didn’t, child, I think I’d be in the billionaires’ club," she told nytimes.com.
Tyra broke into modelling when she was 15 and since then she's seen a huge amount change in the industry. One of the main things is that people now look to social media rather than top fashion magazines for inspiration.
"One of my models this cycle [of America's Next Top Model] doesn’t even know what Vogue is," she marvelled. "I was like, 'How do you know how to pose like this?' And she’s like, 'I don’t knooooww. I’m on social media and I, like, put the timer on my cameerraaa? And I just kinda pose?'"
This is one of the reasons why Tyra decided to introduce a social media element into the series. It saw viewers be able to vote on their favourite models, something the star has now had a rethink on.
"No, we have stopped the audience voting," she revealed. "Some of us understand that quirky is cool, that freckles are cool, that a gap is cool in teeth, that eyes that are far apart are cool or a big forehead is cool. But the majority of the population doesn’t.
"[We can only push modelling boundaries] so far. Even on ANTM we push it in a way that, sometimes, the girl gets into the real world of modelling and can’t find work."
