Toni Maticevski crowned 2016 Australian Fashion Laureate
Toni Maticevski is the 2016 Australian Fashion Laureate.
Melbourne-based designer Maticevski has dressed the likes of Lily Collins, Rose Byrne and Solange Knowles, and has now received one of the top honours in fashion.
The Australian Fashion Laureate Awards recognise outstanding contribution to the industry, and is a joint programme between IMG Fashion Asia Pacific, which organises Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, and the New South Wales government.
Upon being presented with the award on Wednesday (19Oct16) at a ceremony held at the Sydney Opera House, Maticevski admitted the award had resonated “emotionally”.
“(Knowing) that my peers voted for me, that they’ve acknowledged that all of us work our asses off to be visible internationally and to be there every season and to kind of make this industry really strong,” he beamed.
He follows in the footsteps of designers including Zimmermann sisters Nicky and Simone and Carla Zampatti in winning the accolade.
Other winners include Ellery for Best Womenswear category, Strateas.Carlucci named the Best Menswear brand, and Sydney boutique Parlour X was named Best Retailer.
Maticevski has previously been crowned Best New Designer at the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and won the Prix de Marie Claire Best New Designer award, joint with Kit Willow.
Earlier this year (16) an exhibition titled Maticevski: Dark Wonderland opened at Victoria’s Bendigo Art Gallery, which runs until 20 November.
He is also the focus of a new piece of writing called Maticevski: The Elegant Rebel by Sydney writer Mitchell Oakley Smith.
