Tommy Hilfiger: Nadal is the perfect model
Tommy Hilfiger sees huge potential in Rafael Nadal modelling the brand's underwear.
The American designer has no problem hiring fashion's elite to work for him and has previously featured the likes of Behati Prinsloo and Kendall Jenner in his campaigns and catwalk shows.
Earlier this year he confirmed he had signed Rafael to front a fragrance, and now the tennis star has taken things a step further and is modelling Tommy Hilfiger's underwear range. It's a big deal for both the sportsman and company, with a two-year contract seeing Rafael as ambassador starting this fall.
“We see huge potential. We started to take this segment of the business very seriously. We thought in order to do it we would really need a global icon," Tommy told WWD.
The tennis player shows off his muscular physique in the campaign, wearing both navy and white boxer briefs with a towel around his neck.
His involvement coincides with Tommy re-launching his underwear range after 20 years. The new offerings will be more technical and will feature a four-way stretch microfiber and a silky waistband.
“Because we’re so global now, Rafael Nadal resonates globally in most countries in the world. He also looks amazing in the underwear and the clothes,” Tommy added, referring to Rafael also being the face of the label's tailored pieces.
“He’s not doctored up, that’s the real guy."
Rafael is set to attend an exclusive celebrity tennis tournament in New York this afternoon, hosted by Tommy. Other big names who are on the guest list include Martha Stewart, Jane Lynch and Chanel Iman.
It helps that Rafael and Tommy have been friends for some time now after meeting in Monaco, and his campaigns will include print, TV and digital advertising around the globe. Billboards will also boast his buff bod, with cities such as Hong Kong and Paris lucky enough to have them on the streets.
