Sophia Webster's need for colour
Sophia Webster uses colour to grab attention.
The British footwear designer counts the likes of Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lawrence and Blake Lively as A-list customers and has recently opened her first store, in London’s swanky Mayfair.
Talking about her designs, Sophia says it’s all about making her shoes the must-have accessory.
“I learned early on that colour is a great way to grab attention,” she smiled to Britain's Grazia magazine.”But I quickly adapted with heels as accessories for the red carpet and then started to accommodate more women with flats, sneakers, espadrilles and mid-height heels... But I never expected this (my store)”.
The shop, located on Mount Street, is in good company with neighbours like Christopher Kane and Simone Rocha not far away. The new base is made up of soft pastel shades, including a stunning lilac quilted couch, and plush grey rugs.
In March (16) she scooped the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, beating Emilia Wickstead, among others, to go home victorious. Pondering her success, Sophia thinks it comes down to a mixture of elements.
“It’s a combination of things. It’s about having a product with a different point of view at a really good price,” she said.
Many of Sophia’s shoes hang around the £500 mark, though can carry a price tag from £240 to £1,600.
Chatting further about her new shop to vogue.co.uk, the designer says she’s hoping to draw inspiration from hanging out at the address.
“I wanted it to feel intimate, like you're getting a special experience," she explained. "I think I will be spending a lot of time here, it really helps with designing and developing the collection when you get feedback on certain things and it's difficult to get that feedback when you don't have a store."
