Sophia Webster goes tropical for spring '17

Sophia Webster took inspiration from the 1960s and the tropics for her spring 2017 line.

The British footwear designer presented her latest collection, titled The Dolly Birds, as part of London Fashion Week on Monday (19Sep16).

Taking inspiration from the jungle, retro silhouettes and the costuming in films Dreamgirls and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, Webster unveiled a broad collection of Perspex heels, muled slides, mid heights and chunky curved platforms.

The lineup featured a pair of coral-coloured sparkly platforms which had a matching clutch bag, while fashionistas were wowed by the aptly named Firebird - a silver heel with bright leather cut-outs to give an abstract winged effect. And the Coco Flamingo pumps made in silver patent leather with black flamingo designs up the back of the heels were a standout.

Core styles such as the best-selling Chiara butterfly high heel sandals and Lucita wedges have also been updated in a fresh colour palette for the season.

The presentation marks another success for 31-year-old Webster, who not only won the BFC Vogue Fashion Fund award this year, but also opened her first store in London’s upscale Mayfair in May (16). Her focus on diversifying her collection to include sneakers and flats also has been paying off, as has her advertising, drawing in celebrity clientele such as Empire’s Taraji P. Henson and singer Gwen Stefani.

And with more than 800,000 Instagram followers, Webster is now focusing on reaching a new audience via social media.

“It’s a way to convey our ethos and our message and what we do. We also tried to be early adopters on Snapchat,” she told Footwear News prior to her presentation. “I’m a real person and not a faceless brand. That makes the brand easier to relate to.”
