Roksanda Ilincic: Have fun with fashion

Roksanda Ilincic believes everyone should be "brave" with their style.

The Serbian designer is based in London and has won fans with her bold, colour-block designs. She's always taken risks with her look and would never regret trying out new things - even if they don't work.

"As a teenager, I had an undercut and dyed my hair red. It didn’t suit me at all, but it’s never a mistake to be brave — nobody should be afraid of having fun with fashion," she grinned to London Evening Standard.

Growing up in Serbia, the fashion star noticed her passion for style at a young age. She'd even give her dolls a marker-pen makeover, colouring their lips red and their eyelids blue.

In London she was then able to grow this love of fashion, believing it to be the industry's "centre".

"I first came here in the late 1990s and was blown away by the street style. People were breaking rules — combining winter coats with flip-flops, dresses with trainers, or wearing suits with crazy hairstyles. I thought: ‘This is incredible,'" she recalled.

Roksanda also gave an insight into her own wardrobe, admitting she must have more than 100 vintage Yves Saint Laurent pieces. One thing no one would find in her closet is denim.

"I never wear jeans; they just don’t exist in my wardrobe. On my days off I wear a brightly coloured top or shirt with trousers — perhaps some culottes or masculine tailored trousers — and an oversized coat and flats, not heels, as I have to run around after my four-year-old daughter Efimia," she shared.
