Roksanda Ilincic gives life to her clothes

Roksanda Ilincic wants her designs to create a "vision".

The Serbian designer is based in London, where she studied at Central St Martins before founding her eponymous label in the early 2000s. She shows at the city's bi-annual Fashion Week every year and feels it's her duty to give onlookers a true insight into her world when sending models onto the runway.

“When I send a look out on the catwalk it needs to be Roksanda from head to toe. It’s about a complete vision, about bringing your world to life," she told the Irish Times.

“I like the contrast of ‘dressy’ outfits with hair that feels quite natural, with a little bit of texture.”

Her clothes cater to the "modern woman" whose day is varied with events such as business meetings and dropping children off at school. As well as being comfortable and easy to wear, Roksanda ensures her garments make the wearer stand out, which is bound to be why she won famous fans like Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart.

While some fashion stars are now choosing to ignore the seasons, Roksanda is particularly inspired by the different times of year when dreaming up clothes and accessories.

“It’s a really busy fashion calendar so it’s a whirlwind process," she explained. "I usually start with choosing my colours and my fabrics, then sketching shapes, choosing the shapes and defining the mood; it’s a process that evolves all the time until the collection is finished.

“I love bright colour and mixing unusual fabrics, for example with natural silks with manmade technical materials."

And with such pretty pieces, it's no surprise the fashionista chooses to wear her own designs on a daily basis: “I prefer midi skirts or culottes with flats for day as I find them so easy to wear. For evening I am spoiled for choices with so many dresses in my collections.”
