Riccardo Tisci's youthful new Nike sneakers
Riccardo Tisci’s latest Nike offerings reflect the youth culture of the ‘90s.
The fashion designer, who helms brand Givenchy, has teamed up with the sports giant on several collaborations over the last couple of years and has recently unveiled his latest. He’s created two new styles of the label’s Nike Air Zoom Legend sneaker, available in jacquard black with monochrome detailing or a black mesh finish with a rainbow heel.
“We chose this shoe because its story is so closely linked to the nineties as a symbol of youth culture and street style,” Riccardo told Vogue.com. “This style was a street icon at the time. Its story revolves around sports, movement, life by the ocean, and the energy that comes from this lifestyle. That freedom and optimism define my state of mind.”
As for the inspiration behind the finished designs Riccardo notes it’s “very Tisci” and reflects his own taste. He merged different aesthetics, a classic front with a futuristic-style heel, to create a unique type of footwear, injecting a sense of tradition too.
“This is a strong shoe with a dual contrast and an experimental style,” he added. “And the heel had to be important - its aesthetic has always represented strength since ancient Greece, where Achilles’s heel represented the human male force.”
Fans can get their hands on the Nike Air Zoom Legend sneakers in the brand’s new NikeLab store in New York from 11 November (16), before it hits other shops and online later this year (16). And loyal followers of Riccardo and Nike will be pleased to hear that their collaboration isn’t even close to an end, as the fashion star noted: “I am open to working with all kinds of Nike pieces.”
