Rebecca Minkoff: 'My customers love Coachella'

Rebecca Minkoff's customers see Coachella as their "Christmas".

The designer threw a party to coincide with the annual music festival this weekend (15-17Apr16), with guests treated to customisation of their leather jackets, henna tattoos and a design your own lip gloss bar. Smashbox Cosmetics co-founder Davis Factor helped organise the bash and Rebecca was pleased to see her creations doing so well at the famous event.

“Our customer considers Coachella her Christmas,” she told WWD on her decision to hold a gathering. “When I counted over 500 of our bags at the festival, I was like, ‘Wow.’ We knew that this is a big experience for her, and as a brand, we wanted to keep talking to her in a place she loves.”

Reality star-turned-designer Whitney Port was one of the guests to attend and found herself matching Rebecca with her outfit; a white shoulder-baring dress with a floral pattern.

“I walked in and my sister said ‘I think someone is wearing the same dress as you!’ and then (Rebecca) turned around and I was like, ‘That’s OK. I can handle that,’” Whitney giggled.

Stylist Johnny Wujek, whose clients include pop star Katy Perry, served as DJ at the do having previously provided music for Rebecca's Los Angeles store opening last year (15). He rocked a pair of sneakers by Uri Minkoff, Rebecca's brother.

“I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 17 years and gone to Coachella every single year,” Johnny said. “It’s been sleeping in a car to, you know, having a house.”

Rebecca is at a busy point in her career, as it was recently announced she's set to expand across the pond thanks to her fall 16 line debuting at British department store Selfridges. The fashionista shared her delight at being sold in the shop last week (end15Apr16), especially as she's a customer herself whenever in the U.K.
