Rankin to launch debut perfume

Fashion photographer Rankin is moving into fragrance with a unisex scent.

The British lensman has shot countless high-end campaigns and photoshoots over the years, and has even helmed music videos. But now he's taking on new territory by teaming up with The Perfumer's Story's Azzi Glasser on a fragrance, set to launch in October (16).

S&X by Rankin features notes like leather, jasmine and magnolia, with hints of white musk and Earl Grey tea.

“I’ve always wanted to work on a perfume, on a scent,” Rankin, full name John Rankin Waddell, told WWD. “I’ve met (Azzi), like, a hundred times probably, but never just put two and two together, so in a way it was like working with family. So when we met we talked about myself, I asked her a lot of questions and then somehow she went away and brought it back.”

Unlike previous collaborations when he's simply gone "back and forth" without being happy, Rankin felt an "instantaneous" love for Azzi's idea. He visited her "den of perfume" and describes it as one of the most amazing experiences he's ever had.

“It’s very sexy,” Azzi added of S&X by Rankin. “To me, a perfume should be sexy anyway, but with this one I wanted to make it addictive and also to leave that trail behind so when you wear it, you walk past and you should leave this essence of a trail.”

She describes the scent as a "print" of the photographer's character, style and life. Azzi has plenty of experience capturing a person's personality in a perfume as she's previously created products for big names such as Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp.

S&X by Rankin will cost £95 ($119) and will launch exclusively at London department store Harvey Nichols and on Theperfumersstory.com on 1 October (16), before moving into select retailers in January 2017.
