Raf Simons confirmed for Calvin Klein
Raf Simons' appointment at Calvin Klein marks a "new chapter" for the brand.
The designer stepped down from the helm of Dior in October 2015, triggering countless rumours amongst the industry about where he would head next.
Now, reports that he was set to take over from Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli at Calvin Klein following their exit in April (16) have been confirmed, as Raf has been named the brand’s new chief creative officer.
He will be the sole leader of the womenswear and menswear departments in an attempt to unify the sectors.
"The arrival of Raf Simons as chief creative officer signifies a momentous new chapter for Calvin Klein," Steve Shiffman, CEO of Calvin Klein, said in a statement.
"Not since Mr Klein himself was at the company has it been led by one creative visionary, and I am confident that this decision will drive the Calvin Klein brand and have a significant impact on its future. Raf's exceptional contributions have shaped and modernised fashion as we see it today and, under his direction, Calvin Klein will further solidify its position as a leading global lifestyle brand."
It’s thought that Raf’s non-compete agreement expired at the end of last month (Jul16), which explains the delay of announcing his new job. He will present his first collection for the label next February (17), unveiling Calvin Klein’s Fall/Winter 17 offerings.
Pieter Mulier, who was Raf’s right hand man at Dior, will also be joining the company as creative director, continuing the duo’s long-standing collaboration.
"Mulier will be responsible for executing Simons' creative and design vision for all men's and women's apparel and accessories lines within the Calvin Klein brand," a representative confirmed.
Calvin Klein also shared the news on its official Instagram page, posting a photo of Raf and listing all the areas he will be in charge of in his position.
“Mr. Simons will lead the creative strategy of the Calvin Klein brand globally across the Calvin Klein Collection, Calvin Klein Platinum, Calvin Klein, Calvin Klein Jeans, Calvin Klein Underwear and Calvin Klein Home brands,” part of the caption reads.
