Rachel Zoe: CFDA induction was dream moment
Rachel Zoe’s dreams were fulfilled when she was inducted into the CFDA.
The 43-year-old has been in the industry for more than 20 years. In that time she has worked as an editor, stylist and designer despite having no formal fashion training. Having learnt everything she knows on the job, Rachel was thrilled to have her hard work acknowledged by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2012.
“When I got inducted to the CFDA for me that was dream fulfilled. I literally had the biggest smile on my face,” she told Glamour. “I look at it every day and it makes me happy. Because that was a thing I never thought I could be a part of, ever.”
Rachel started out as a fashion assistant at YM magazine before progressing to senior fashion editor. She decided to make the leap to being a stylist for celebrities including Britney Spears.
“[I thought] You know what, I’m 25, it's now or never, close my eyes hold my nose and jump. And I did,” she added. “The sky’s the limit for what you can do, but don’t expect anyone to hand it to you. I’m not going to sugar-coat it. It’s really hard work, all of it.”
Rachel became known for her own personal style as much as her work with others. But it wasn’t until 2011 that she became a designer.
“Everyone had always asked me, ‘When are you going to be a designer?’ I said not yet, not sure if I’m ever going to do it,” she recalled. “I knew the reality of what it takes to be a designer, so I really needed to wait until I was ready to make the jump."
