Preen designer: My looks are so Jedi
Preen's Justin Thornton often looks at his designs are marvels about how "Jedi" they are.
The designer and his partner Thea Bregazzi are behind the British brand, which often features nods to the Star Wars films in its pieces. This is largely because Justin is such a huge fan of the sci-fi franchise, and he's even created two looks to celebrate the upcoming new movie Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
"I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since it first came out, it was the first film that really meant something to me," he told harpersbazaar.co.uk. "It’s so visually strong, there are so many references to draw from, so it’s always been an influence even if you can’t really tell when the final version comes down the runway. It might be a red line, or an oversized coat, or something graphic. I’ll often look at a piece and say ‘That’s so Jedi.' "
For the film, the fashion house has created two special looks under the collection title Star Wars: Fashion Finds the Force. One of the looks is a floor-length tube dress in black, with a graphic white and red design and the other is the same fabric but in a looser dress with elbow-length sleeves and a full skirt.
For Justin, the impact of the Star Wars movies is evident in fashion as a whole. "I feel like I grew up with Star Wars, each film came out as a pivotal point in my life," he said. "It's always an underlying influence; the style is very unisex. I think the modern woman wants to dress in a way that isn’t afraid to express femininity but it also has to be something tough. There’s the modern element, with the graphic black and white, or something a bit rougher - the desert element with the sand colours. It’s subtle sci-fi that’s coming through on the runway."
Star Wars: Fashion Finds the Force will be sold via auction, with proceeds going to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.
