Phillip Lim: 'Never say never in fashion'

Phillip Lim is an evolutionary designer, not a revolutionary one.

The American clothes maker comes from Chinese descent, and along with business partner Wen Zhou, is behind one of the world’s most popular brands. His 3.1 Phillip Lim label is often spotted on the likes of Diane Kruger, Jessica Alba and Solange Knowles, and the 42-year-old is glad people get where he’s coming from when it comes to clothes.

“I always say that I am an evolutionary designer, rather than a revolutionary designer,” he smiled to luxurylondon.co.uk. “My approach is to create classics with a sense of madness. Clothes are like your friends – you should be able to rely on them. And of course, in fashion, rule number one is ‘never say never’.

“I want to be remembered as someone who tried his best every day.”

The 3.1 Phillip Lim brand was founded in 2005, which means over a decade of non-stop hard work for the style star. To celebrate the milestone Phillip and Wen have created a special campaign titled Stop and Smell the Flowers. The visual blog pays tribute to the label’s triumphs, including backstage photos taken at the Spring/Summer 16 presentation in New York and the Autumn/Winter 16 men’s preview in Paris. The recent floral installation in the London store also features.

“The last decade has been a whirlwind,” Phillip admitted. “So the 10 year anniversary is really the first moment that I have been able to slow down and take it all in. I am grateful to be here as a designer doing what I love and so I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all of those that have been supporters, friends and customers since day one.”
