Paul & Joe designer is all about French chic
Paul & Joe designer Sophie Mechaly is all about imbuing her clothes with a sense of "French chic".
Mechaly launched the brand 20 years ago with a men's collection which featured modern tailoring and original prints. Following the line's success, the Paris-born designer expanded into womenswear and debuted a more youthful collection, Paul & Joe Sister, before introducing beauty products.
Counting A-list stars such as Julia Roberts, Kate Bosworth and Vanessa Paradis among her fans, Mechaly is thrilled that both celebrities and everyday women have embraced her take on Parisian style.
"For me it’s about girls with style and who just love French chic," Mechaly told MarieClaire.co.uk.
However, a definite highlight for the designer was when Britain's Duchess of Cambridge wore a Paul & Joe cream embroidered cape to event during her eight day royal tour of India and Bhutan last month (Apr16). Mechaly was surprised to see the stylish mother-of-two in her trendy cape, and reveals the garment was sold out in her Mayfair, London store within hours.
"It was so unexpected! She is sublime, I love her energy and natural beauty. My team and I were really honoured to see her wearing one of our designs and the media around the world covered the news. It was a day of great excitement, lots of phone calls," she smiled.
Mechaly also credits her success to the fact that she is always "fighting" with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure collections are produced to the highest quality consistently and are delivered on time. She also thinks steering away from trends and creating a "recognisable unique style" helped too.
Though she admits the arrival of "fast fashion" has meant she has had to be more creative and produce even better quality products to stay relevant, and is focusing on creating original and entertaining events to present her clothes rather than traditional fashion shows.
