Pat McGrath taps couture trend for new lip kits

Pat McGrath is predicating glitter lips will be beauty’s next big trend.

The A-list make-up artist, who recently created Rihanna’s beauty look for the W magazine cover, is bringing glitter to the masses. While Pat wasn’t on set with Rihanna, she oversaw the army of artists who made the look come to life, with plenty of sparkly and metallic touches adding to the shoot’s dramatic vibe.

“When people wore glitter before it was tons of eye make-up,” Pat told WWD. “The modern way to wear glitter is with bareness. That’s what makes it so fresh.

“It’s (about) a bare face, a modern, bare face with mascara and brow control and a touch of Skin Fetish (Pat’s highlighter) and a divine jewelled lip.”

To make this look accessible Pat has taken it upon herself to create her own line of glitter lip looks. Pat McGrath Labs’ Lust 004 consists of an uberpigmented, matte lipstick topped with ultrafine glitter. The glitter pots can be mixed and matched and layered on top of each other. The kits are available in three shades, Version Flesh (nude), Version Vermillion Venom (red) and Version Bloodwine (purple and deep red), with each kit made up of with two matte lipsticks, a clear, high-shine lip gloss, saturated gold pigment and a glitter pot.

Metallic and glitter were one of the biggest trends to come out of Couture Fashion Week 16, seen on Jean Paul Gaultier, Pierre Cardin and Schiaparelli’s catwalks.

“Glitter is for every day, in my mind,” Pat smiled. “You want it in the daylight, you want it in the sun.”

Each kit has a $60 (£46) price tag, but for those not ready to dive fully into the glitter game, the lipsticks themselves are available for $25 (£19).
