Olivier Rousteing's Indiana Jones inspired collection

Olivier Rousteing took inspiration from Indiana Jones for Balmain's Spring/Summer 16 collection.

The French designer showcased the collection during Paris Fashion Week menswear in June (15), marking the first time Olivier had showed men's clothes on the runway. The catwalk was awash with military and safari inspired pieces, in a colour palette ranging from desert tones to all black outfits.

"My mood board was all the old adventurers, like Indiana Jones," Olivier revealed to Matches Fashion. "It was a mix of men that I had in my mind – all those old travellers who loved to discover the world and the new legacy. My men are going to discover a new world and have a different story. I included a Union Jack flag because I love London – I think it’s really important to push the British flag. It’s the most modern city in Europe."

Balmain may be the fashion house of choice for female celebrities and models, but the men's sector continues to soar too. Olivier has been at the label's helm since 2011, succeeding Christophe Decarnin in the role. His work with Balmain has been widely praised, and Olivier admits when it comes to menswear, he's been able to grow on a personal level with each collection.

"I think the Balmain man has evolved in the same way I have evolved," he stated. "The Balmain man is confident and sexy. He feels powerful. Maybe he’s listening to hip-hop music, but he’s also really chic. He’s a modern man. He always has a jacket to make him feel like a dandy."

While he's fully committed to fashion, Olivier does harbour secret desires to work in music and cites Taylor Swift and The Weeknd as two of the most exciting singers in the industry.
