Nicholas Kirkwood designs bags for Bulgari
Nicholas Kirkwood has put his design skills to the test by creating handbags for the first time ever in a collaboration with Bulgari.
The British fashion star is best known for his footwear, founding his eponymous label in 2005 and becoming the go-to designer for red carpet shoes.
Now he’s turned his attention to another important part of an outfit, the bag, as he’s teamed up with Italian jewellery house Bulgari on several totes. Known as Serpenti Through the Eyes of Nicholas Kirkwood, the collection is inspired by the brand’s distinct Serpenti Forever motif and includes designs such as a rucksack and a wallet on a fine chain.
“We’re a very different company than we were before,” Kirkwood told Business of Fashion. “The last couple of years we’ve had a lot of reorganisation, and now I’m at the point where I’d like to work on more collaborations... For me, it was (an opportunity) to work on another product.
“Although we’re very different kinds of brands, there are a lot of similarities in the codes that we use. I wanted there to be this slightly more contemporary London feel about the collection, but still execute it in a very Bulgari way."
The line, which marks the first time Bulgari has partnered with an outside designer, will be priced upwards of $2,600 (£1,990) and launches on 1 September (17) in Bulgari and Nicholas Kirkwood stores as well as the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue and Net-a-Porter.
It seems this venture has inspired Kirkwood to be more adventurous with his own company too, as he’s hoping to offer more than footwear in the future.
“I want to be able to expand into other types of products and I think for now the best way of me doing that is through these collaborations. And it’s so much a part of my DNA," he added. “I won’t be doing bags immediately for myself, but it definitely feels like a natural extension."
