Matthew Williamson: I absorb fashion
Matthew Williamson gets drunk on his love for fashion.
The British designer got a head start in his career when friend Jade Jagger suggested Kate Moss walk in his first show in September 1997, and since then he's become one of the most lauded names in style. Everyone from Britain's Duchess of Cambridge to Rihanna has been seen out in his designs, which are always lovingly crafted, as Matthew is obsessed with fashion.
"Be prepared to live and breathe it," Matthew told Britain's Glamour magazine. "How passionate are you about being a fashion designer? Does it feel like a pleasure, not a job? Do you live and breathe it? If that's the case, then you could make a career out of it. If you have more scepticism than enthusiasm, it's a tough road. Be drunk and absorbed by it."
The 44-year-old shortlisted his main tips for making it to the top, and his advice includes remaining positive, learning about business and to never forget your customer.
He also explains that there's more to fashion than just clothes, explaining that to create a successful brand you have to encompass many other areas and always understand your opportunities.
"Be canny about collaborations," he noted. "We're working on activewear, stationery, gifting and wallpaper, and have most recently worked with Aero on their chocolate wrapper. Fashion comes with a lifestyle halo. What we do is a 360 approach.
"Jump at opportunities, but realise when it's time to move on. In 2005, I accepted a creative director job at Emilio Pucci, which at the time was an attractive proposition. We felt we'd be able to run two brands and that there was a synthesis between them. Three years later, I decided to focus on my own label again. Sometimes, if you read two books at the same time, the characters get confused."
