Matthew Dolan: Gaga and RiRi changed my life

Matthew Dolan's career was changed by Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

The US born designer, who grew up in Australia, has become synonymous with denim, and has a whole flock of A-list stars who favour his jean-style creations.

However, helming his own label wasn't high on Matthew's priority list when he graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York. But after Gaga's stylist Brandon Maxwell dressed her in some of his designs and i-D magazine put Rihanna in one of his jackets earlier this year, Matthew has carved out a new career path.

"She [Rihanna] held on to it, and all of a sudden I was getting 50 emails a day," Matthew told Bilboard magazine.

"Up until a few months ago, I’d just been excited about the possibility of working at a big [fashion] house. Rihanna and Gaga changed all that."

Both singers have been seen out and about rocking oversized, long denim jackets from the label.

In September Matthew showed a full denim collection for his MFA Parsons show, full of frayed and tasselled pieces.

As comfortable as he seemed with denim, it was actually the first time he'd worked with the fabric.

"I’d never worked with [the material] up until then.

"I’m fascinated by the familiar. Taking something so common and making it tactile through weaving," he explained.

Earlier this month fashionista's favourite boutique Opening Ceremony placed an order, with Matthew's designs hitting shelves later this year.

His love for over frayed denim includes sneakers full of tassels, dresses and of course jeans.
