Mary Katrantzou in awe of Azzedine Alaia

Mary Katrantzou would happily wear Azzedine Alaia every day.

The Greek, London-based fashionista is famed for her flamboyant pieces and is the go-to person for fun summer wear. While her clothing may be bold with its bright colours and print, Mary's personal taste is slightly more demure as she loves garments by Tunisian-born couturier and shoe designer Alaia.

"If Azzedine Alaia could dress me every day, that would be fantastic," she smiled to Britain's Elle magazine. "His technical artistry is incredible. My go-to dress is a black viscose Alaia. Black is a great palette cleanser when you make so many decisions with colour daily."

Mary has become one of the most popular female designers in the industry over the past few years. For those looking to follow in her footsteps, the star has shared some pearls of wisdom.

"To make it as a fashion designer you must have a vivid imagination and the ability to self-edit," she advised. "There is so much creative stimulation in this industry that if you don't edit your ideas, they won't make sense.

"My first 'pinch me' moment was when the editors came to see my collection in Paris (in 2008). I was starting out and no one could pronounce my second name."

Away from work Mary enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Marios Politis. She describes her beau as her best friend and having been together for 14 years, she can do practically everything with him.

She also likes to get stuck into a good book or jet back to her home country for a spot of relaxation.

"There's an island in Greece called Spetses that I go to after the shows to clear my head," she said. "It's so peaceful, and takes me straight back to all the carefree days I spent there as a child."
