Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen unveil 'playful' new perfumes

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s new fragrances reflect the "playful" side of life.

The designer twins helm two labels of their own, The Row and Elizabeth and James, with both brands famed for their on-trend offerings. Mary-Kate and Ashley released perfumes under the latter, called Nirvana Black and Nirvana White, several years ago and they’re now set to add two more scents to the collection.

This month (Aug16) sees the launch of Nirvana Rose and Nirvana Bourbon, however, the siblings admit they once again turned to the same ingredients which drew them to the world of fragrance in the first place.

“We are the most consistent people,” Ashley told U.S. InStyle.

“It was nice being able to play with colour a little bit,” Mary-Kate added. “The world is not all black and white, so the question was how do we round out this idea? These reflect the colourful, playful side of life, the imagination and the fun.”

Mary-Kate also pointed out that their new products are in the “same nostalgic world” as their original scents, and proceeded to share what notes they included in the upcoming perfumes.

“Whereas Rose is more of a Rose de Mai essence, with a little bit of vetiver, the Bourbon has a vanilla tone to it, so it’s a smokier, richer, feeling,” she explained.

Nirvana Rose and Nirvana Bourbon are available to purchase on now, costing $85 (£66) for a 50ml bottle, and they’ll hit stores from 19 August (16). The 30-year-olds are all about giving their customers more choices when shopping, adding more denim and knits this season too.

“The reason we launched with two fragrances in the first place was that we wanted women to have options,” Ashley said, adding, “So now we’re expanding those options.”

It seems the stylish sisters love all their perfumes equally too, as when asked by Byrdie which scent they preferred out of Black or White back in 2014, Ashley replied: “It just depends on just how you’re feeling. They also smell really nice together.”
