Marc Jacobs's inspiring new campaign
Marc Jacobs felt inspired by people who were part of his “fashion family” when putting together his new campaign.
Almost a year ago the designer decided to wrap up Marc by Marc Jacobs and unify his lines into one entity. His new venture has celebrated some of his favourite people including Cher and Winona Ryder last season, while Spring 2016 features Better Midler and Sandra Bernhard.
“I started looking at pictures that I did over the years with (photographer) Juergen (Teller)… and we didn’t really have money to shoot an ad campaign,” Jacobs said. “But Kim Gordon, who was and is a friend of mine, was performing and she was wearing one of my dresses. I asked Juergen if he would go around and photograph her on stage and he did. When I started thinking back to all of that, (my long time collaborator) Katie (Grand) and I thought that it would be a nice thing to do… bring in the people who were a part of the Marc Jacobs family. People who have inspired me creatively and people who were somehow connected to the work that we do."
Bette had no hesitation in agreeing to join Marc’s line-up and is clearly thrilled with the results. Taking to Instagram, she thanked the designer for capturing her spirit in the campaign.
"I've never been happier! Thank you, @MarcJacobs for really seeing me,” she wrote alongside an image of her in a floral floor-length dress with plunging neckline.
Marc has realised how important digital platforms such as Instagram have become in the fashion industry and set up his own account in March 2015. He became renowned for his outspoken and personal posts, and admits he went through a cooling off period with social media and during one interview he ranted about it, but now fully embraces the phenomenon.
“It sounded like ‘I hate Instagram, I hate social media, it’s ridiculous and I don’t want anything to do with it,’” he recalled about his outburst.
“But I learned a lot from Instagram, because I started following people that are my friends. I don’t get to see a lot of the people I’m friendly with because we are in different places at different times.
