Marc Jacobs and Thom Browne win CFDA Awards

Marc Jacobs and Thom Browne received top honours at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards.

At a gala hosted by funnyman Joel McHale at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York on Monday night (06Jun16), Jacobs received the Womenswear Designer of the Year prize, beating out the likes of Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte and Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen for The Row.

Browne took away the Menswear Designer of the Year gong, putting him ahead of the other nominees, including Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne for Public School, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville for Rag & Bone, Todd Snyder and Tim Coppens.

Superstar Beyonce Knowles was the recipient of the Fashion Icon Award, which was a surprise considering that the winner of that the honour is typically revealed along with the other nominees in April. The Lemonade singer sparkled in a pinstriped Givenchy suit and a wide-brimmed black hat straight from her The Formation World Tour as she accepted the award from fellow fashion icon and CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg.

Elsewhere, Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel of Mansur Gavriel won the Accessories Designer of the Year award, while the Swarovski Awards went to Brandon Maxwell for womenswear, Alex, Matthew and Samantha Orley of Orley for menswear as well as Paul Andrew for accessories.

Among the other honorary prizewinners this year were Norma Kamali, who received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award; Donna Karan, who received the Founder’s Award; Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, the International Award, and the Board of Directors’ Tribute was given to singer and style icon David Bowie, who died in January (16).

Often referred to as "the Oscars of fashion" there was no lack of star power at the event.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was on Michael Kors’ arm in a mint beaded gown he custom-designed for the British model, while Christian Siriano displayed his versatility with a sleek red crepe gown for Alicia Silverstone and a black satin tuxedo featuring a one-sleeved, asymmetrically hemmed jacket for Selma Blair.

Naomi Campbell turned up in a sleek, back-baring gown by award winning stylist and designer Brandon Maxwell. "Most of my designs are for strong, confident women, and you just don’t get more confident than Naomi Campbell," he said.
