Manolo Blahnik honoured by Couture Council
Manolo Blahnik was honoured at the Couture Council of the Museum of FIT’s annual luncheon yesterday.
The popular footwear designer is a favourite among red-carpet regulars, which is why he seemed the perfect fit for the council’s award for artistry.
Held at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, Uma Thurman was in attendance to present Manolo with the prize.
“I’m not very good in public,” he said in acceptance, according to WWD. “It’s great to be in America and New York. The generosity of your people…
“New York is one of my favourite cities… Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Actress Uma spoke fondly of the designer, joking he’s literally been with her “every step of the way”.
The enormity of the award didn’t even sink in after Manolo had held it in his hands.
“It hasn’t really registered yet. It’s a great time and a great moment,” he smiled.
Yesterday marked the first time a shoe designer had been honoured with the award, proving how special Manolo’s pieces are. And while the fashion star himself seems perplexed, the whole industry is well aware of how iconic he is.
“Manolo is almost an adjective by this point,” Linda Fargo, senior vice president of fashion at Bergdorf Goodman, smiled. “If you can be known by one name, you’re in Madonna territory.”
Guests last night almost exclusively wore Manolo’s designs, further proving just how cherished he is among the A-list.
