Manolo Blahnik creating clutch bags

Manolo Blahnik is adding to his empire with a new range of clutch bags.

The designer is best known for his feminine shoes, which often feature a glittering Swarovski finish on the toe.

Now fans of the label can match their footwear to their arm candy, as a line of six bejewelled clutches is on the way.

“Every woman needs a jewel - something very special and beautiful. There is nothing more stunning than a feminine hand holding a gemlike object,” Manolo told WWD.

The luxurious bags are made of satin and crepe de chine and feature a larger version of the Swarovski-encrusted design that adorns Manolo’s shoes.

They can be snapped up in the price range of $1,725 to $1,925 and stockists include Manolo Blahnik’s stores in Old Church Street, London, and at 31 West 54th Street in Manhattan. Liberty and Harrods will also have the range, as will stores in Italy, Sweden and Germany.

It’s not the first time the label has made bags, but previously they’ve always been designed to match a certain shoe style. So branching out into a full collection is new to chief executive officer Kristina Blahnik.

“It’s the first time we’ve focused the bags into a capsule collection with its own story,” she explained.

For now, the line matches eveningwear, but the company is looking at expanding into day bags. A spring 2016 collection is already being designed, so it looks like Manolo bags are here to stay.
