Manolo Blahnik and Vetements rework iconic shoe

Manolo Blahnik is joining forces with Vetements on a limited edition shoe design.

The famed footwear brand is one of many labels teaming up with French fashion house Vetements, which is headed up by former Louis Vuitton designer Demna Gvasalia.

In total 18 brands are working with Vetements, including Levi’s, Brioni and Juicy Couture. The Manolo Blahnik collaboration will be shown on Sunday (03Jul16) as part of Paris Couture Week.

“I am excited about collaborating with Vetements,” Blahnik said, according to WWD. “I think it is of the moment to mix different brands and wear them the way you want. I like the freedom of that — fashion shows have become so boring — hence why I was intrigued and said yes when they approached me.”

Only one shoe has been focused on, the Hangisi design. The satin heeled pump has been reworked for the show, with Gvasalia tweaking the iconic silhouette to better fit in with his label’s aesthetic. The signature crystal buckle usually seen on the Hangisi, favoured by the likes of Elizabeth Olsen and Olivia Palermo, has been removed and the shoe has been transformed from a pump into a slingback, a court style and also a thigh high version.

The material used has been frayed, rather than the smooth satin finish usually seen, with unfinished fastenings encapsulating the new shabbier look.

In keeping with the original Hangisi design the new shoes will be available in a range of bright shades, with both brand’s logos featuring on the sole. Customers will be able to purchase the limited edition footwear from select retailers as well as Manolo Blahnik’s website.
