Lily Donaldson: My sarcasm scared people

Lily Donaldson once joked she was a "squid hunter" when asked if she was a model.

The 28-year-old model was scouted in London, UK, when she was 16 and has posed in high-end campaigns for brands including Max Mara, Jil Sander and Dolce & Gabbana during her career.

It took a while for Lily to get her head around her job when she was younger, which meant she'd often pretend she did something else.

"I remember going to Glastonbury when I first started modelling and people would say, 'Are you a model?' And I’d be like, 'No, I’m a squid hunter,'" she recalled to the British edition of Elle magazine. "I’d make things up. Then I realised that when I was saying that, I was making people feel really uncomfortable."

Lily's gorgeous looks and enviable blonde tresses have won her a huge fan following and the fashionista often interacts with them through social media.

But things haven't always gone swimmingly for the style star. In 2011 she was seriously injured following a horseback-riding accident that left her unable to walk for around three months. Speaking to The Edit recently, she recalled the scary incident and how it changed her perspective.

"I'm so, so lucky. I was knocked out by the tree, so I don't really remember anything. But it readjusted my feelings. It was like, 'Oh, you can hurt yourself,'" she said.

"I wasn't good at being incapable of doing things. It was the worst. [The accident made me feel] lighter about life. You realise you've had a brush with death, so you have to enjoy yourself. I would've been f**ked if I had come out of that and been super-grumpy!"
