Kate Upton: People don't expect much

Kate Upton finds it easy to impress as she feels people have "low expectations" of her.

The 22-year-old beauty has a burgeoning fashion career, landing several covers of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and being named the face of cosmetics giant Bobbi Brown. She even has acting credentials to her name after starring in flicks Tower Heist, The Three Stooges and The Other Woman.

While it would be difficult to doubt her talents now, Kate admits not everyone has confidence in her.

“People always have low expectations of me, but that makes it easy to impress them! If I make up my mind that I’m going to accomplish something, it’s like I have tunnel vision. I block out everything else and that’s all I see," she explained to The Edit.

“I remember my mom telling me [when I was younger], ‘You need to take a break from horse riding because it’s a lot of travel,’ and I was like, 'OK...' Three months later I went to Miami to start modelling. I was always trying to explain that I could do more... It took a long time.”

Once she landed in New York in 2010 and signed with agency IMG, things sped up for Kate. She landed a contract with Guess and scored her first cover for Sports Illustrated in 2011.

That's not to say Kate was fully aware of her stylish surroundings though, and she recalls having to educate herself on fashion photographers such as Mario Testino, Steven Meisel and Annie Leibovitz before working with them.

"I knew about rainbow flip-flops, and that’s about it! So I’d look everyone up, see which other people they’d shot and what their style was, to be as prepared as possible," she added.

Throughout her journey to fame, the blonde beauty has had constant support from her family, especially her mother Shelley. Her mum always said she was born with "rough edges" but rather than cutting them down, she helped file them into the star she is today.
