Julien Macdonald to debut menswear at LFW
Julien Macdonald is launching menswear.
The Welsh designer is known for his sparkly, feminine creations which have been seen on everyone from Kylie Minogue to Nicole Richie.
Now he's turning his attention to the male market, and debuts his offerings at his London Fashion Week show later this month.
"[I've]always been interested, [but] I’ve never really found the right time to do it," he told WWD, adding inspiration struck when designing his latest womenswear collection.
“It isn’t [a] gentleman. I’ve taken inspiration from my own clothes and things I’ve seen guys in London wearing, especially in the East End, the Shoreditch area of London where the most fashionable kids hang out. It’s almost like a unisex of kind of fashion, really. So I think it’s interesting but it’s not a tailored gentleman. If you want a suit, don’t come to me.”
The collection is made up of knitwear looks and lots of prints.
Julien's ideal male customers include Jay Z, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Kanye West.
“It’s for fashionable men, for men who love fashion and love to buy into designer brands, and to buy something that other people won’t have,” he smiled.
Despite being known for his flirty designs when it comes to womenswear, Julien says his signature style won't be seen in the new collection.
“I am a man and I’m constantly aware that I don’t want [the collection] to be too feminine or too crazy. There is a certain sense of wearability, and that is the challenge. Would my friends wear it? Would those guys wear it? And I want the guys to wear it and look cool and feel strong and masculine," he commented.
Julien's London Fashion Week show takes place on September 19.
