Julien Macdonald praises Gigi Hadid's 'effortless style'
Julien Macdonald has praised Gigi Hadid's "effortless style, whether during the day or on the red carpet".
The 21-year-old beauty wowed in a series of outfits as she hosted the American Music Awards on Sunday night (20Nov16). Two of the ensembles were by British designer Julien, who adapted a shorts suit and gown from his spring 2017 collection for the statuesque blonde to wear while presenting the ceremony.
And now, speaking to Britain's The Telegraph newspaper, Julien revealed his admiration of Gigi is not a new thing.
"She is one of (my) favourite supermodels in the world," he said. "She has effortless style whether during the day or on the red carpet."
So when the chance to work with Gigi arose, it was a no brainer for Julien. He collaborated with the model herself and her stylist Monica Rose, who also frequently collaborates with the Kardashians, to come up with the best looks for her AMAs wardrobe.
"This is a great creative process where we send sketches to Gigi and her team and work together to create the perfect look," he explained. "Firstly, she wore a sharp tailored white jacket, heavily embellished with Swarovski crystals and metal chain fringes from my SS17 collection. Her nude cocktail dress was custom made, a reptile-inspired enamel cutaway dress, creating the effect of a second skin."
Among Gigi's other looks was a red Atelier Versace gown with sexy cutouts, a black keyhole dress and a sheer and sparkling jumpsuit.
Despite changing six times during the ceremony, it's Jennifer Lopez who retains the record for the most wardrobe changes while hosting the AMAs - swapping her looks a staggering 15 times while presenting last year's (15) ceremony.
And Gigi revealed that while she would have been up for taking on Jennifer in the changing stakes, it was actually the singer's team who advised her that so many wardrobe changes was a bad idea.
"We did our research and J.Lo's team told us to do less changes," Gigi said as she spoke to reporters on the red carpet before the ceremony. "I'm going with about half, but they're great looks and they're going to get a good amount of time."
