Jonathan Simkhai debuts gilded gowns for Resort

Jonathan Simkhai has unveiled a capsule collection of ornate evening gowns as part of his Resort 2017 collection.

In addition to his signature ornamental party dresses and sleek separates, whose fans include the likes of Gigi Hadid and Miranda Kerr, Jonathan revealed a line of eight gorgeously embellished gowns at his preview show in New York on Monday (06Jun16). The dresses feature delicate beading, embroidered lace, beaded lace, and eye-catching ostrich feathers.

On Monday, Simkhai also attended the CFDA Awards with British model Jourdan Dunn, who showcased one of the new evening gowns; a nude beaded tulle lunette gown, to great effect as she posed on the red carpet with the designer.

The 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner tells Fashionista.com: "Women wanted to wear (my dresses) on really special days and I had just an overpowering feeling inside that made me want to do them," he smiled. "Now is the time."

Revealing his inspiration, the New Yorker cited the glass ceiling windows of the Grand Palais in Paris and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. "They are unbreakable, the detail and different framing is so intricate," he explains. "I used a lot of those motifs for the lacework and embroideries, and then we wanted to create something that was beautiful and felt like a shield."

The detailed handiwork was done in India and all the sewing was done in his hometown, New York.

While the design work is detailed and intricate, and no doubt costly, Jonathan says he strived to make the collection as accessible as possible.

"Some of them are a little bit more made-to-order - there's a range in the collection, different price points, some of the gowns are more accessible," he shared.

Details of retail locations for the evening wear are yet to be confirmed, but after a successful debut Jonathan shared he will "incorporate more gowns" into all his future collections.
