John Varvatos: My style laws

John Varvatos lists investing in smart shoes as one of his ten style rules.

The American designer helms his namesake label, which offers casual takes on men's tailored looks.

The brand also produces shoes and accessories, two areas John finds important when it comes to his own style.

"Invest in smart shoes. Pay attention to your shoes. Shoes complete the outfit. A bad pair of shoes can ruin an entire look," he told Matches Fashion of his fashion rules.

"Ignore the trends. Don’t be influenced by fashion trends. Fashion trends come and go. Instead, focus on being a man with style.

"Add some interest. Accessorise. Add a scarf. Wear a ring, necklace or leather bracelet. The key is to make sure you don’t overdo it."

Ensure a good fit, love leather and find your jeans style were three more golden rules the designer lives by.

Last month John hosted his annual Stuart House Benefit in LA, which raises money for child victims of sexual abuse. Stars including Jesse Metcalfe, David Schwimmer and Chris Pine helped to raise close to $1million.

John looked cool in a leather jacket, with an added scarf over a simple grey T-shirt.

"Look sharp. The devil is in the details. You may be wearing the perfectly tailored suit, shirt, tie and shoes but it’s a waste if your zipper is undone," he continued.

"Scrub up well. Take care of your skin. Exfoliate, moisturise and use SPF. It’ll help keep you looking younger and slow the ageing process.

"Have fun. Buying clothes should be an enjoyable experience. First, find out what works for you. Once you find your look, that’s when you can experiment."

His last rule was too ooze confidence. To do this, the designer insists you must be comfortable in your clothes.
